Buildplus help

One category, every report

Accounts and transaction type move the money — categories explain it. A single category on each entry turns your ledger into invoices, cash flow, budgets, and a P&L you can actually read.

Every group works through two lenses: the cost-plus job — what the owner is billed — and company reporting — how it lands on your P&L and cash flow.

Billable Expenses

On the cost-plus job
The exact set of costs included in cost-plus invoicing: materials, labor, equipment, permits, overhead, and professional or subcontracted services. Every dollar here flows into the invoice subtotal your fee is calculated on.
On the company books
On the P&L most of these land as cost of construction, offset by the owner billings they generate — pass-through cost, not margin. Self-performed labor is the exception: it bills like a cost yet still counts toward gross profit.

Gross Profit

On the cost-plus job
CM and GC fees are the “plus” in cost-plus. Account revenue records other company income; these categories are not pass-through job costs.
On the company books
This is where margin comes from: fees, self-performed labor, and account revenue sit between billings and overhead on the P&L — the difference between moving money and making it.

Reimbursements

On the cost-plus job
Costs you fronted and get back dollar-for-dollar — no markup, and no fee calculated on top.
On the company books
Shown gross as reimbursement income matched by the expense you fronted. Full recovery leaves profit unchanged; rejected or extinguished recovery leaves the expense as a loss. Reimbursements start excluded from cash flow so repayment does not read as new operating income.

Other Expenses

On the cost-plus job
Insurance, bank fees, and Unbillable Expense never enter the cost-plus subtotal. Use Unbillable Expense as the catch-all when a cost should stay off the owner invoice.
On the company books
They reduce net profit below the gross profit line. Watching this group is how you catch margin quietly leaking out of a job.

Payments & Credits

On the cost-plus job
The settling-up group: payments and deposits record money applied against an invoice, while returns, credits, and adjustments reduce what is owed.
On the company books
None of these are revenue or expense on their own — they move balances, not margin — so receivables stay accurate while the P&L stays clean.

Equity & Advances

On the cost-plus job
Contributions, withdrawals, advances, and repayments are not job costs and never touch the cost-plus subtotal.
On the company books
Money moving between the business and its owners is a balance-sheet event, not P&L. Owner withdrawals start excluded from cash flow so a draw does not read like a project expense.

Platform

On the cost-plus job
Entries Buildplus creates as deposit allocations, payouts, and cancellations move through the platform, keeping owner-facing numbers reconciled to the penny.
On the company books
Mostly plumbing with no P&L effect. Platform fees are the exception — a real cost of doing business that appears as a fee expense in profitability.

Invoices

Billable Expense categories are the complete cost-plus subtotal. Return, Credit, and Adjustment can reduce it. Payment and Deposit track money applied to the invoice.

Cash flow

Cash account direction decides inflow or outflow. Categories organize those movements. Reimbursements and Owner Withdrawal start excluded and can be included at any time.

Profitability

Accounts decide revenue and expense. Labor, service fees, account revenue, reimbursements, and platform fees create clearer profitability buckets.

Budgets

Categories make budget and actual-cost groups legible. Changing category does not move money between ledger accounts.

Labor and Professional Services are billable costs with additional profitability roles. Their account and transaction context determines the exact reporting effect.
